By now you may have heard that thousands of individuals and hundreds of local organizations have joined together to take a community-wide 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge. The Challenge is a powerful opportunity to collectively develop a deeper understanding of how inequity and racism affect our lives and community. The Brighton Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to learning and taking action to create an equitable community for all, and has chosen to participate in the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge.

    WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

We encourage you to visit www.ROCequitychallenge.org to sign up for the Challenge. After you sign up, each weekday from October 23 – November 20, you will receive an email from info@ROCequitychallenge.org with articles, podcasts and videos that will provide opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of how racism and inequity affect our lives and community, offer suggestions for reflection and options to continue your learning or take action. The Brighton Chamber of Commerce will also continue reviewing our organization’s policies and practices to examine how we can ensure equity remains a focus.

Thank you for standing with the Brighton Chamber of Commerce to confront racism, bias and other social injustices to create a just and equitable community for all.

We teach kids ages 7-14 to code by building their own video games while also learning about logic, problem solving, and social interaction skills. Our structure is similar to martial arts, where kids will "belt-up" from white belt to black belt as they progress through our curriculum in our fun, bright and clean environment. We operate a year-round flexible drop-in program, birthday parties, day camps, summer camps, and other special events. We are the first in Western NY, we are women-owned and operated, and are excited to serve our Rochester community! Visit http://www.codeninjas.com/ny-pittsford for more details.

Statement of the Brighton Chamber of Commerce: Committed to ending racism and discrimination in our community

    June 10, 2020

    Dear Brighton Chamber Members,

The Brighton Chamber of Commerce condemns the senseless killings and acts of violence that are repeatedly directed at the African American community and all communities of color. We grieve the loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and the countless others who have lost their lives.

Racism and injustice cannot be tolerated. These acts cause many in our communities to live with fear, apprehension and anxiety that have been allowed to persist for far too long. The Brighton Chamber of Commerce condemns all acts of hate, discrimination and injustice, and remains dedicated to creating and sustaining an inclusive community where people want to live, work and play.

We support those peacefully protesting to end these injustices and are committed to ending racism and discrimination in our community through our words and actions. At this critical juncture, we must stand together to collectively speak out against systemic oppression.

We ask you to join us in this effort and to take your own steps to push back against racism and injustice to help drive meaningful and lasting change that ALL of our communities deserve. We challenge business and community leaders, ourselves and each person in our community to actively work towards a better understanding of one another and commit to actions which produce a more inclusive community and economy.

    Stay safe and healthy.

    Nelson Lopatin, President

    Kelly Bagnaschi, Vice President
